Artificial intelligence is not just changing how we use technology—it could also make the technology itself more expensive. The explosive growth of AI has created enormous demand for memory hikes and other critical components, putting pressure on global supply. According to J.P. Morgan research, standard DRAM prices could surge by up to 400% by the end of 2026. For everyday buyers, that could mean higher prices for laptops, PCs, smartphones, and other devices as manufacturers pass rising component costs on to consumers.
Tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta are aggressively expanding their AI infrastructure, building massive data centers to power increasingly demanding AI workloads. These facilities consume enormous quantities of specialized High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is essential for high-performance AI accelerators.
Unlike standard DRAM, HBM requires significantly more wafer capacity to manufacture. As semiconductor manufacturers shift more production capacity toward HBM to meet surging AI demand, less capacity is available for conventional memory used in laptops, smartphones, and other consumer devices. This tightening supply is putting upward pressure on standard memory prices and could make everyday devices more expensive.
Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron account for roughly 90% of the global DRAM market. This high level of market concentration means that any shift in production capacity, supply allocation, or demand from major customers can have a significant impact on the overall memory market. This suggests that SSD prices could eventually stabilize as supply conditions improve, although prices may remain elevated in the near term.
RAM Prices: Unfortunately, the outlook for conventional system RAM, particularly DDR5, is less encouraging. Major technology companies are securing large volumes of memory to support rapidly expanding AI infrastructure, placing additional pressure on available DRAM capacity. At the same time, manufacturers have strong incentives to prioritize higher-margin AI memory products such as HBM. This shift in production capacity could keep conventional DDR5 supply relatively tight and delay meaningful price relief for consumers.
The AI boom is changing more than the software and services we use; it is also reshaping the hardware market. Surging demand for HBM and other components used in AI infrastructure is putting pressure on semiconductor manufacturing capacity, while conventional DRAM and NAND memory face their own supply and pricing challenges.
For everyday buyers, the biggest concern is that higher component costs can eventually translate into more expensive laptops, desktops, smartphones, and upgrades. RAM prices are particularly important because manufacturers may continue prioritizing higher-margin AI memory, potentially keeping conventional DDR5 prices elevated for longer.
That doesn’t mean consumers should rush out and buy a new device out of fear. If your current laptop, PC, or smartphone still meets your needs, there is little reason to upgrade simply because prices are rising. However, if you already need a new device, buying a well-configured system with 16GB of RAM or more and sufficient storage could be a smarter decision than choosing a cheaper configuration and paying significantly more for an upgrade later.
Ultimately, the AI-driven memory boom is likely to create both challenges and opportunities. Component and memory hikes eventually stabilize as manufacturers expand capacity and supply catches up with demand, but the timing remains uncertain. For buyers, the best strategy is not to panic-buy—it is to compare prices carefully, prioritize the hardware you actually need, and look for value rather than simply chasing the latest AI features.
