BSNL has collaborated with several leading technology and telecommunications companies to build and expand its satellite communication ecosystem. Each partner plays a distinct role, ranging from satellite connectivity and Direct-to-Device (D2D) services to ground infrastructure and nationwide network deployment.
BSNL’s Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) is powered by a strategic partnership with Inmarsat, one of the world’s leading satellite communication providers. The satellite phone communicates directly with Inmarsat’s geostationary satellites, allowing users to make voice calls and send SMS even in areas where conventional cellular networks are unavailable.
This partnership enables reliable communication across remote villages, mountainous regions, offshore locations, disaster-hit areas, and other places beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile towers.
BSNL has also partnered with Viasat to develop next-generation Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite communication services. Unlike traditional satellite phones, D2D technology is designed to allow compatible consumer smartphones to communicate directly with satellites during emergencies without depending on nearby mobile towers.
Beyond commercial services, BSNL and Viasat are working together on advanced satellite communication solutions for India’s defense sector, including modernization of the Indian Navy’s SATCOM infrastructure through hybrid multi-band satellite networks.
Within India, BSNL collaborates with Nelco, a Tata Group company specializing in satellite communication services. While BSNL manages licensing and service operations, Nelco provides critical VSAT infrastructure, gateway facilities, and ground station support that help route satellite communications efficiently across the country.
Although not directly involved in BSNL’s satellite phone service, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is a key technology partner in BSNL’s broader telecommunications modernization. TCS is supplying indigenous 4G network equipment and software to help BSNL deploy nearly one lakh mobile towers across rural and urban India, strengthening the country’s overall digital connectivity alongside satellite-based communication services.
